What is the best coffee-to-water ratio?
The most common starting point is 1:17 (e.g., 20g coffee to 340g water) for pour-over methods.
What is the coffee-to-water ratio for French press?
A good starting point for French press is 1:15. For 30g of coffee, use about 450g of water.
What is the coffee ratio for pour over?
Pour over and V60 brew well around 1:15 to 1:17. Start with 1:17 and adjust stronger or lighter to taste.
How much water do I need for 20g of coffee?
At 1:17, 20g coffee needs 340g water. At 1:15, it needs 300g water.
Does grind size change the ratio?
Grind size affects extraction more than ratio. Finer grinds extract faster, so you may lower the ratio slightly; coarser grinds may need a slightly higher ratio.
Can I use this calculator without a scale?
A scale is recommended for accuracy. If using volume measures, 1g water is approximately 1ml, and 1g coffee is about 2 tablespoons.
